Although the removal of the statues was approved by the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission in a 7-1 vote, not everyone is in favor of their removal.
Hiroko Tamano, According to Chakko, Berkeley City Civic Arts Commission representative, who voted against the statues’ removal, suggested alternatives to removing the statues. None of her suggestions were taken in to account.
Scott Donahue, the sculptor of the “Berkeley Big People” statues was at the city council meeting and his intentions were promised to be considered.
Many were not happy with the decision to remove the statues. Some were upset because the meetings were not well publicized and were held in gteh middle of the day when many people could not attend. They had two meeting adn finalized the decision to remove very quickly.
Donahue will try to sell parts of the statues but if he cannot they will go home to his personal art studio. More to follow.
